After a lot of back and forth, discussions with a few friends, and soul-searching, I've made the reluctant decision not to review Gateway Center for the Arts productions.
It's no fault of theirs - I saw the most recent production "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever", and overall it was worth the ticket. In comparison to the last show "Freaky Friday - the Musical" the Christmas show relied much more on the child actors...and then it hit me: GCA is really a young adult Theater. Both of these shows had large casts, and the vast majority of actors were < 18 years old.
There's certainly nothing wrong with this - a theater to provide young actor access to learning the ins and outs of acting, for FREE - is no small thing. And, pun intended, this theater acts as a Gateway drug for the Stage infection.
All good things!
But - I refuse to critique these kids just starting out, and will not squash their starry eyes OR inflate the heads of the greatly talented and their stage moms. Kidding! (mostly...)
So I retire GCA from the calendar.
If there's a local Community theater I've missed, please do let me know.
